Founder's Corner
“Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it’s the first step towards reclaiming one’s life and building a brighter future for yourself and your children. Whether you are a man or a woman, remember that reaching out is an affirmation of your strength and courage.”
Professor Fatima Waziri-Azi - Founder
In a society where women and children often bear the brunt of injustice, I knew I had to do something. This passion led to the creation of Safe Haven Foundation (SHF) in 2016. The foundation’s mission is to raise awareness against domestic and sexual violence and, most importantly, provide emergency shelter for victims and their children fleeing abuse. Studies show that many women remain trapped in violent relationships because they lack the means to escape, both financially and physically.
Domestic and sexual violence is a pervasive issue, crossing cultural, economic, and religious boundaries. In Nigeria, as in many parts of the world, the problem is exacerbated by cultural norms and a lack of reliable data, largely due to the stigma surrounding this issue. Domestic abuse is not just about physical violence; it’s a long-term pattern of control, coercion, and manipulation. It includes physical violence, sexual abuse, financial control, emotional degradation, and isolation from loved ones.
At Safe Haven Foundation, we strive to be the bridge between the painful past and a hopeful future free from violence. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it’s the first step towards reclaiming one’s life and building a brighter future for yourself and your children. Whether you are a man or a woman, remember that reaching out is an affirmation of your strength and courage.
